Aging Envelopes

Need a cheap decorating object... I have used many aged envelopes to make a old looking picture frame or tucked in copied images or old photos as Christmas ornaments and set them in the tree... I have pictured a couple I have in my home at this time... I simply start by taking a card envelope.. can be any size you want to work with... Crumple it in your hands..... Then lay it flat and straighten it out..... To make it appear older I usually tear or cut out uneven spots in the edges.... I use my coffee filter in the morning after I have brewed my pot of coffee to dab onto the envelope or paper I want to look old .. Dab and age to extent you would like... I usually go extreme... It can be a bit messy as I usually leave the grounds in also for a more desired look... You can only do this on maybe 5 envelopes before filter will give out on you.... Let to dry out... When almost dry I like to take a candle and burn just the edges.... Maybe a good thing to do this outside for safety sake and it may Set off your trusty fire alarm..... I ready a old photo for insert by tucking a heavier piece of cardboard into the envelope for structure... Make sure you make a ribbon loop or string loop in back of envelope for hanging before inserting desired photo or tag... I usually glue the top of my photo in once I have desired location.. tilted or straight.. depending on photo or image.... You can do some altered art on envelope or add buttons.. ribbons... gems.... I use the same process for aging papers or many things as I always have a filter to use every day if desired.... Many times I will tell Tom to leave the filter and he knows I am at it again.......

I love the look of your aged envelopes. Thanks for the instructions on how you do it. I have recently started to make some vintage cards and have been wanting to learn how to 'age' an envelope. Not certain they would be able to go through the post though :)

WOW; thanks for sharing this! I had never thought to use envelopes to age and use as cabinet card holders! Love it! I'm addicted to vintage photos and buy them all the time!

Can you also make the envelope more see through if you rub grease or butter on it? I like the aged look, but I need to have some transparency too. Thanks and great work!
