Making Ribbon Roses

While attending a floral design show several years ago... I learned how to make ribbon roses from a bolt of ribbon... after returning home and sitting up until early hours of the morning trying.... These can be achieved in many sizes and materials... This one is made in a no.9 ribbon { 1 1/2"} which is a good size to practice how to make... You start with about a 20 inch long ribbon strip... I am right handed so I hold my ribbon in my left hand. I also use a floral wood pick to turn the rose as it is square and the ribbon doesn't slip when turning.... always fold under.... fold your ribbon under as shown in illustration... The tab should be underneath to start... fold under again as shown... Continue to fold under and turn ... fold under and turn...until you have achieved a square shape... with about a inch tab on top... Take wood pick and find center of ribbon... with the wood pick shove the top tab down center of ribbon... Holding securely with left hand take wood pick under neath and place in center and slowly start turning... You will see you center of your rose start to form... After learning this you can make you roses as tight or loose as you desire your look... The bottom tabs must be wired off or sewed to secure with needle and thread... Gluing can be done but takes longer.... You may add a pipe cleaner or wires to rose if desired stem for arranging... Floral corsage leaves may be added if desired...wrapping with floral tape finishing off... I mainly use these for scrapping or gift wrapping or embellishing... You may have to try a few times to be successful... I have tried to teach this at different shows I had hosted.. Some ladies caught it right a way and others just couldn't make their finders work... Good Luck... I did find it somewhat difficult trying to hold on and take pictures at the same time... Ps. The picture of the latte colored rose at the very top was achieved with more than 20 inches of ribbon and a vintage rhinestone earring adding to the center for glam....

I used to work for a company that used ribbon roses on the pillows I would sew for them...it was piece work...anyways..i have always loved hand wrapped ribbon roses....
i found a 'machine' contraption that helps you to roll them like that...but I think doing it by hand is so much better!
well done!

Hi Marietta,

I first want to thank you for this wonderful tutorial for making ribbon roses. I have tried other methods but I love this one most of all. My grandmother was also a floral designer and corsage maker. I loved her work so much. Please pop over to my blog and see what your tutorial helped me to create today. I thank you again so very much! Hugs and God Bless you. Susan from Art Of Mine.

Thank you for the clear directions and photos. I was trying another style but not too pleased with the look.
the first one I've done with yours came out so much better. Used a bamboo skewer to poke it through. Now I can welcome the neighbors in style....here in Kampala Uganda. Thank you so much.
